Mastectomy Procedures

What Is a Mastectomy?

A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that removes breast tissue to treat or prevent breast cancer. While the word itself can feel heavy, representing loss, uncertainty, or fear, it can also mark the beginning of your healing journey and the chance to reclaim control.
There are several types of mastectomy procedures, and each one is tailored to a patient’s specific diagnosis, goals, and overall health. Options include a traditional mastectomy, nipple-sparing mastectomy, prophylactic mastectomy, hidden scar mastectomy, and completion mastectomy. Each approach has distinct benefits depending on your unique needs.

Understanding Your Options

Every woman’s breast cancer journey is uniquely her own—which is why the choice of mastectomy procedure should reflect not just medical needs, but personal values, goals, and preferences.

Traditional Mastectomy (Total or Simple Mastectomy)

A traditional mastectomy involves the removal of as much breast tissue as possible, including the nipple and areola. Also called a total mastectomy or a simple mastectomy, this approach is often recommended when cancer is located near the nipple or in cases where nipple-sparing isn’t medically appropriate. While this option doesn’t preserve the natural breast appearance, it remains safe and effective—and can be followed by advanced breast reconstruction to restore a natural look and feel.

Prophylactic Mastectomy

A prophylactic mastectomy is a preventive surgery that removes one or both breasts to significantly reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. It’s most often recommended for individuals with a strong family history of breast cancer, known genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2, or other high-risk factors. While the decision can feel overwhelming, many women choose this path as a proactive step toward protecting their health and future.

Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (NSM)

Unlike the traditional approach, a nipple-sparing mastectomy preserves the nipple and areola while removing the underlying breast tissue. This option offers more natural-looking results and can positively impact body image after surgery. It is typically considered when the cancer is not close to the nipple, and the area can be safely preserved. PRMA frequently combines this procedure with natural tissue reconstruction for the most natural-looking outcomes.

Hidden Scar Mastectomy

A hidden scar mastectomy uses carefully placed incisions—often in the inframammary fold (under the breast) or around the areola—to minimize visible scarring. This technique can be used with either traditional or nipple-sparing approaches, depending on your clinical situation. It’s ideal for women who do not need a significant lift and are seeking a more discreet aesthetic result.

Completion Mastectomy

A completion mastectomy removes any remaining breast tissue after a previous partial mastectomy or lumpectomy. This procedure may be recommended due to new findings, cancer recurrence, a poor cosmetic outcome after a lumpectomy, or personal preference for long-term peace of mind. At PRMA, we approach completion mastectomies with the same care and attention to detail as the patient’s initial surgery—always prioritizing cancer care first and foremost, while achieving the best possible cosmetic outcomes, and sensation preservation when possible.

Real Patients. Real Stories

Behind every procedure is a woman with her own story—each one a powerful reflection of resilience and the life-changing impact of advanced reconstruction.

DIEP Flap Reconstruction
"Here we are now, I’m four weeks post surgery, back in Singapore and finally living each day without fear. My recovery is going well. The drains came out on days 6 and 11. My surgical tape came off this week and my incisions and scars look amazing. They are so well placed, right above the inframmamary fold, which no one would know unless I showed them. My muscles are sore, but they are healing each day through gentle stretching exercises. Overall, my breasts are beautiful and I couldn’t be more pleased with my results."
