Breast Reconstruction

What is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to rebuild the breast following mastectomy or lumpectomy. This transformative surgery restores the breast’s natural shape, size, and appearance using either tissue from your own body or breast implants. For many women, breast reconstruction serves as an essential part of emotional healing, helping them reclaim their femininity, confidence, and sense of wholeness.

PRMA is one of the leading breast reconstruction centers in the world. Our advanced techniques include microsurgical flap options such as our exclusive High Def DIEP®, as well as our proprietary TruSense® procedure designed to restore breast sensation. Whether you are newly diagnosed or considering reconstruction after previous implant procedures, our dedicated team is here to support and empower you throughout your journey.

Understanding Your Options

Immediate vs. Delayed Reconstruction

As you explore reconstruction, one of the first questions is when to have surgery. Some women choose to begin reconstruction immediately, while others wait until cancer treatment is complete. The right choice depends on your unique situation.

Immediate Breast Reconstruction

Delayed Breast Reconstruction

Immediate Breast Reconstruction

Immediate breast reconstruction takes place at the same time as a mastectomy and often provides the best cosmetic results. This option can also reduce emotional distress by minimizing the number of surgeries required while preserving body image (avoiding the experience of a flat chest). Candidates for immediate breast reconstruction are those who:

  • Won’t need post-mastectomy radiation
  • Seek the best possible cosmetic outcome
  • Want to avoid the experience of a flat chest
  • Seek fewer surgeries and faster recovery
  • Feel ready to choose reconstruction at diagnosis

Delayed Breast Reconstruction

If radiation therapy is part of your cancer treatment—or if you're not ready for reconstruction right away—a delayed approach allows healing and flexibility. PRMA routinely performs delayed reconstructions, including complex revision procedures for patients unhappy with previous implant results. Candidates for delayed breast reconstruction are those who:

  • Need or recently completed radiation therapy
  • Want to focus on cancer treatment first
  • Aren’t ready to decide on reconstruction at diagnosis
  • Have prior implant results they want revised
  • Prefer to space out surgeries and recovery

Natural vs. Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction

Natural Breast Reconstruction

Natural breast reconstruction uses your own tissue—often from the abdomen, thigh, or buttocks—to create a soft, warm, and natural-looking breast. PRMA is internationally recognized for our expertise in natural tissue procedures like the High Def DIEP® flap. These techniques offer long-term peace of mind without the risks of implants—and when paired with our exclusive TruSense® technology, they can restore sensation, too.

Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction

Some patients may choose or require implant-based reconstruction. While implants can be a quicker solution, they come with long-term risks like capsular contracture, ruptures, and multiple revision surgeries. At PRMA, we provide implant-based options but always help patients explore safer, more natural alternatives whenever possible.

Hi, my name is Kelsey Cain and I’m from New Braunfels, Texas. I chose PRMA for a couple of reasons. My breast surgeon at the Start Center worked a lot with them and recommended I go to them.
