Sensation Restoration
What is Sensation Restoration?
After a mastectomy, many women are surprised to learn that their chest may feel completely numb, even after reconstruction. This loss of sensation isn’t just a physical change; it can affect how a woman connects with her body, intimacy, and sense of self.
At PRMA, restoring breast sensation is more than an option—it’s part of our mission to rebuild lives, not just breasts. By identifying and reconnecting sensory nerves during a sensation-preserving mastectomy, we give patients the chance to not only look natural, but feel like themselves again.
Understanding Your Options
We provide two distinct techniques for sensation restoration. The first technique, TruSense®, utilizes a person's own tissue reconstruction (known as a "flap") to reconnect nerves, while the second technique, Resensation®, employs a nerve graft to bridge nerve gaps.
TruSense®
During a mastectomy, sensory nerves in the breast are often severed, resulting in numbness. With TruSense®, PRMA’s surgeons use a microsurgical technique to restore sensation. During a DIEP flap or SIEA flap procedure, for example, they connect the sensory nerves from the chest wall to those in the transferred tissue flap.
Resensation®
A sensation-preserving mastectomy that utilizes a nerve graft is known as the Resensation® technique. This technique can be performed alongside any type of reconstruction, whether it involves a flap or an implant, because the cadaveric nerve graft is prepackaged. PRMA surgeons use the Avance® nerve graft developed by Axogen when a graft is required.
