Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction

What is an Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction?

An implant-based breast reconstruction surgery rebuilds the breast using saline or silicone implants instead of the body’s own tissue, such as with a tissue-based reconstruction.

Getting breast implants after a mastectomy can be performed in one or two stages, depending on your needs, and is often chosen by patients who prefer a shorter surgery or don’t have enough tissue available for flap-based reconstruction. While they’re not considered permanent, implants can restore breast shape and may offer a quicker initial recovery.

We support every patient’s journey, providing clear guidance, surgical excellence, and a path aligning with your body, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

Understanding Your Options

Like with any breast reconstruction surgery, determining which implant-based breast reconstruction option is best for you depends on the unique needs and goals of your journey. Your PRMA surgeon will evaluate your surgical history and help guide you toward the best option.

Tissue Expander-to-Implant

A tissue expander-to-implant option is a two-stage breast reconstruction in which a temporary tissue expander is first placed beneath the chest muscle or skin at the time of mastectomy. Over several weeks, the expander gradually fills to stretch the tissue and create space for a permanent implant, which is placed during a second surgery. This option is often used when the skin needs time to adjust after mastectomy or if radiation is part of the treatment plan.

Direct-to-Implant Reconstruction

Also known as one-stage reconstruction, this procedure allows for a permanent implant to be placed immediately at the time of mastectomy, avoiding the need for a tissue expander. It’s typically recommended for patients with small to moderate breast size, healthy skin, and no need for post-mastectomy radiation. Direct-to-implant can offer fewer surgeries and a quicker overall recovery.

Hybrid Reconstruction

Hybrid reconstruction combines an implant with a small amount of natural tissue, often from the abdomen or another donor site. This approach enhances coverage over the implant, improves softness and shape, and may reduce visible rippling or implant edges. It’s an excellent option for women who want the volume of an implant but also desire more natural aesthetic and tactile results.
