What is the process like for traveling to PRMA for breast reconstruction?

Handling all PRMA’s out of state patients, I get daily questions on how the process works for patients traveling to us from outside of Texas. It really is a fairly simple process…

To begin, I ask that you fill out the New Patient Forms and send them back to me, via email, along with your ID and Insurance cards. This gives me and the surgeons more info about your medical history: any previous surgeries, allergies, medications and other relevant information. Once I have your information, I will verify your insurance plan to ensure they will cover you for a consultation with an out of state surgeon and cover you if you were to travel for the surgery, bonus is I can also tell you what you would owe for surgery, to help plan as well!

Next, I will ask you to register on our NextGen Patient Portal, this is so you can communicate with your medical team securely!

Next, we schedule your virtual consultation, I will work with you to ensure if you have a surgeon preference we schedule accordingly, as well as get you an appointment in a timely matter. (Keep in mind, we do hold some schedule times for patients with an active diagnosis, so while delayed and prophylactic patients may have a slight wait, we do our best to accommodate those with an active diagnosis within a few weeks)

The next step is photos—everyone’s favorite part! If, for example, you are interested in the DIEP flap, the photos will need from your neck to mid-thigh, in a 360-degree fashion.  These photos allow us to see how much tummy fat you have and to ultimately determine if you may be a good DIEP flap candidate before you even travel to San Antonio. See examples HERE.

The next step will be to send us any medical records you have. Please don’t worry if you don’t have any of your records – Our medical records will send a request to your physicians, and we can get them that way.

Once you have your virtual call, you can then decide if you’d like to travel to PRMA for surgery. If so, we will go over the authorization process with insurance at that time.

Another question I get asked is how long do I need to be in San Antonio and where do I stay?

We tell all our patients that you will need to be in San Antonio for 7-10 days. You will stay in the hospital between 2-3 days and then have a follow up with your surgeon 7 days later before returning home.

I work with the American Cancer Society to assist all our patients with airfare and lodging expenses. They are usually able to help with free or low-cost airfare and lodging which really helps cut down travel expenses a lot. Additionally, our local hotels around PRMA locations offer a discounted rate for our patients. A list of those hotels can be found HERE.

That’s it! Easy Peasy!

What other questions about traveling can I answer for you?
