Regardless of whether you choose to undergo nipple reconstruction or not, nipple/areola tattooing is an option as a “final touch” to your breast reconstruction results.
There are a variety of tattooing options available to patients today. These include traditional 2D tattoos, 3D tattoos and artistic tattoos (like a flower or butterfly).
2D options are performed by tattooing a single colored circle onto the breast. This is a good option for patients and is typically covered by insurance.
At PRMA, we now offer patients advanced 3D nipple/areola tattooing. The 3D option uses multiple colors and uses special techniques to create more detail (e.g. Montgomery glands) to the tattoo making the final results more realistic. The 3D tattoo can also provide the illusion of a protruding nipple, which is appealing to some patients who have opted against nipple reconstruction. 3D tattoos are also typically covered by insurance.
The tattooing is performed in an office setting and usually takes 2-3 hours. There is little discomfort associated with the tattooing as a topical anesthetic is applied by the nurse prior to the procedure to help numb the area being tattooed.
The nurses at PRMA take great care to ensure the color selected for the nipple/areola tattooing is customized to each individual.
As with any tattoo, some fading will occur over time. Touch-up sessions can be booked to ensure your optimal results are achieved.
